2016-2017 Exploring Computer Science Stipends

The 2016-2017 stipend will be $1,000 and the requirements differ from previous years. The new program will include these four phases:

Utah teachers interested in teaching Exploring Computer Science (ECS) will need to complete the ECS endorsement by meeting these requirements.

The Code.org professional development model has four different phases:

• Phase 1: Online Introduction
  • Add Exploring Computer Science (CIP code 11.0701) to your schedule You must be committed to teaching at least one Exploring Computer Science course in order to participate in this professional development. Larger schools may require more sections.
  • Here is an example catalog description (notice there are no pre-requisites for this course):
    EXPLORE COMPUTER SCIENCE (9-12)
    Credit for Graduation: .50 CTE or Fulfills the Digital Literacy (Computer Technology) Graduation Requirement. Introduces students to the expanding field of computer science through an exploration of engaging and accessible topics. Rather than focusing on learning particular software tools or programming languages, the course will focus the conceptual ideas of computing and help students understand why certain tools or languages might be utilized to solve particular problems.
  • Recruit students using Exploring Computer Science flyers.
• Phase 2: Blended Summer Study in June 2016
  • Pass all three sections of the Certiport IC3 digital literacy exam. Click here for more information.

2015-2016 Exploring Computer Science Stipend Information

In 2015-16, the $1,500 stipend will be awarded in three portions. Read the necessary steps listed below to learn how to receive the full stipend.

At the start of your 2015-16 Exploring Computer Science semester:

• Please email a letter to Karson (kqe0711@westminstercollege.edu) with:
  • Number of Exploring Computer Science sections and semesters (Fall, Spring and Winter).
  • Approximate student enrollment for all Exploring Computer Science sections.
• Complete all sections of Code.org and email screenshots of your progress to Karson.

 

Once that information is received, and your first observation is scheduled, you will receive a second stipend of $500.00 ($600 if you only received $400 for your workshop attendance).

 

During your 2015-16 Exploring Computer Science semester:

Attend three monthly meetings during your first semester teaching Exploring Computer Science. These two-hour meetings will be run by an experienced Exploring Computer Science teacher at either a location geographically close to you or online (based on your location). You will be asked to participate in the online CS10Kcommunity.org website as well.

Attend one all-day meeting in October 2015 at Westminster College.

There will be one classroom observation (teachers further than 1 hour from SLC are exempt).

• One observation for Unit 1
• One observation for Unit 2
• One observation for Unit 4
• Email reminders will be sent before each classroom visit
• Observation data will not be shared with your school. It will only be collected to assess the Exploring Computer Science program.

 

At the end of your 2015-16 Exploring Computer Science semester:

1. Complete one last survey in the last month of the semester (December for Fall, May for Spring)
2. Ask your students to take a 10 minute survey that will consist of the students' demographics, likes and dislikes of the Exploring Computer Science course, and interest in CS.
3. Receive the third and last $500.00 stipend once all observations are completed and you have participated in the monthly meetings and online CS10Kcommunity.org website throughout the semester.

It is encouraged that you attend another week long workshop after your first year of teaching Exploring Computer Science. Most teachers have agreed that they learn more the second time around!
